READY RECKONER #7 · PARENTS & FAMILY

I send money to my parents every month. What should we organise?

Sending money is easy. Making sure your parents can manage when you are unavailable is the bigger job.

30-SECOND ANSWER

Don't build only a remittance routine. Build a family money system.

Your parents should know what money is available for everyday expenses, where emergency money sits, who to contact, and what to do if you cannot immediately answer the phone.

Start with these 7 checks

01Monthly living moneyDecide how much your parents normally need each month and which account receives it. Avoid making them depend on asking you for every routine expense.
02Emergency money in IndiaKeep an appropriate emergency buffer accessible to your parents for urgent household, travel or other genuine needs. It should not depend on an international transfer arriving at the last minute.
03Medical payment readinessKnow the health-insurance details, insurer/TPA contacts, nearby hospital process and where the relevant documents are kept. Parents should know whom to call even if you are asleep in another time zone.
04Important financial recordsCreate one simple list of banks, deposits, insurance, loans, investments, property records and important contacts. Do not put passwords, PINs or OTPs in that list.
05Nomination and succession checkReview nominations across relevant financial relationships. A nomination is useful operationally, but do not assume that nomination alone settles every succession/ownership question.
06Authority to act when necessaryIf parents regularly need to handle your India-side affairs, ask the relevant bank/institution what mandate or Power of Attorney arrangement is permitted. RBI says resident POA operations on NRE/NRO accounts are restricted to permitted transactions; a POA is not unlimited ownership of the account.
07A backup person in IndiaIdentify one trustworthy person who knows whom to contact in an emergency. This is especially useful when parents are elderly or the NRI lives several time zones away.

A question every NRI family should answer

If you could not answer your phone for 72 hours, could your parents manage the India-side finances without panic?

If the answer is no, the problem may not be how much money you send. The problem may be that the family system depends too heavily on you.

Where should money sent from abroad go?

RBI permits inward remittances from outside India into NRE accounts and also into NRO accounts. Which account is appropriate depends on whose money it is, its purpose, ownership and what you intend to do with it. Do not use someone else's account merely as a convenient parking place without understanding the ownership and tax implications.

Create a one-page “Parent Money Sheet”

Monthly household amount and payment date
Emergency fund — where it is kept
Health insurance / emergency contacts
Important bills and due dates
Bank / investment / insurance relationship list
CA / lawyer / trusted family contact where relevant
What to do if the NRI cannot be reached

Keep this as an information map, not a password sheet. Never write OTPs, card PINs, internet-banking passwords or other authentication secrets on it.
