30-SECOND ANSWER
Having money is not enough. Your family must be able to find it and follow the correct claim process.
Review nominations, joint-holder arrangements where appropriate, contact details and a simple asset list. But remember: a nominee is not automatically the final legal owner of every asset.
Check these before an emergency happens
1. Bank accounts and depositsCheck whether nomination is registered and whether the nominee details are still correct. RBI says nomination facilitates settlement of a deceased depositor's claim.
2. Mutual funds and dematReview nomination separately. SEBI's 2026 norms allow up to three nominees for demat accounts and mutual-fund folios. Do not assume your bank nomination automatically covers investments elsewhere.
3. InsuranceKeep policy numbers, insurer contact details and nominee information in the family asset list. The family should know that a policy exists even if they do not have your login credentials.
4. Loans and liabilitiesYour family should know which loans exist, the lender, EMI account, insurance linked to the loan if any, and where the documents are kept.
5. Property and important documentsKeep a clear record of title documents, agreements, tax records and professional contacts. Do not make the family search through years of messages to discover what you own.
6. Your Will / succession planNomination makes claiming easier, but succession determines who is legally entitled. For demat and mutual funds, SEBI expressly explains that the nominee receives the assets as trustee for the legal heirs rather than becoming absolute owner merely by nomination.
Nominee, joint holder and Power of Attorney are not the same
NomineeHelps with the claim/transfer process after death. It should not automatically be read as a substitute for succession planning.
Joint holder / survivor arrangementCan affect how an account is operated and settled, depending on the account and mandate.
Power of AttorneyOperates during your lifetime within permitted powers. RBI restricts what a resident POA holder can do on NRE/NRO accounts. A POA is not a substitute for nomination or a Will.
Ask yourself one uncomfortable question:
If your family had to identify every bank account, deposit, investment, insurance policy, loan and property you have in India tomorrow morning — could they do it?
